Zelensky Warns Ukraine May Lose War Without US Support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed grave concerns over the potential loss of U.S. financial and military aid, stating that Ukraine’s chances of prevailing in the war against Russia hinge on continued American support. In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would struggle to survive without assistance from its primary ally, Washington.

The Importance of Unity

Zelensky underscored the critical need for cohesion between Ukraine, Europe, and the United States. “It would be very dangerous if we lose unity in Europe, and most importantly, unity between Ukraine and the United States,” he said. He pointed out that U.S. backing is central to Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression effectively.

Trump’s Stance on the War

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has been vocal about his intention to end U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts. Campaigning on a platform focused on prioritizing domestic issues, Trump has pledged to redirect taxpayer money to benefit American citizens. He has also claimed he could bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours, though he has yet to outline specific steps for achieving this.

When asked about Trump’s potential influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky acknowledged the possibility but highlighted the complexities of such negotiations. “It will not be simple, but yes, he can [influence Putin] because he is stronger than Putin,” Zelensky said. “The U.S. President has the strength, authority, and weapons to impact energy prices and, by extension, Russia’s strategy.”

U.S.-Supplied Weapons and Recent Developments

Ukraine recently utilized U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles to strike Russian territory, marking a significant development in the conflict. This followed a green light from the Biden administration, which has also approved the provision of anti-personnel landmines to Kyiv, according to a U.S. defense official.

Despite these advancements, Zelensky described the battlefield situation as exceptionally challenging. He noted that Ukraine’s resources, including domestic production, were insufficient to sustain a winning strategy without external support.

Russia’s Accelerating Gains

Recent analyses from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicate a troubling trend: Russian forces have gained ground at a significantly accelerated pace in 2024 compared to the previous year. The ISW estimates that Russia has seized approximately 2,700 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory so far this year, a stark increase from the 465 square kilometers captured in 2023.

Ukraine’s efforts to launch offensives, including a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, appear to be faltering. Reports suggest that Russian troops have successfully pushed back Kyiv’s advances, further complicating Ukraine’s military strategy.

Criticism of European Leaders

Zelensky also criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for engaging in a phone call with Putin last week. He described such dialogue as opening a “Pandora’s box,” arguing that isolating Putin is crucial to maintaining pressure on the Russian leader. Scholz’s actions, according to Zelensky, risk undermining the international effort to hold Putin accountable.

The Road Ahead

As Ukraine faces mounting pressure both on the battlefield and diplomatically, Zelensky’s warnings highlight the precariousness of the country’s situation. While recent U.S.-supplied weaponry has bolstered Ukraine’s capabilities, the potential withdrawal of American support could severely undermine Kyiv’s ability to defend itself.

Zelensky’s appeals serve as a stark reminder of the war’s broader implications for global stability and the critical role international unity plays in supporting nations under siege.
