On Wednesday, Bank of America customers encountered difficulties accessing their accounts, though the bank has since indicated that the issue has largely been resolved. Reports of the outage surged around 12:45 PM ET on Downdetector, a platform that tracks service disruptions.
Many users expressed frustration, noting that they were unable to view their account balances. Some customers who could access their accounts were alarmed to see their balances displayed as zero. In a statement to CNN, Bank of America confirmed that “some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today.” The bank assured customers that they were addressing the problem, which they stated has mostly been resolved, and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
However, Bank of America did not provide specific details about the root cause of the glitch, nor did they clarify when all systems would return to normal operation. Multiple CNN employees with Bank of America accounts reported being unable to log in during the afternoon, while others encountered messages indicating that their current balance might be “temporarily unavailable.”
One frustrated customer shared on Downdetector that five of their accounts, which should have held over $20,000, were showing zero balances. Another user mentioned that while he couldn’t log into his account, his wife could, but her accounts also displayed no balance. Another comment highlighted the irony that the system accurately reflected his debt, even amidst the balance issues.
This situation underscores the challenges faced by banking customers during technical outages and raises questions about the reliability of online banking systems.
