Biltmore Estate Closes After Hurricane Helene

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, has temporarily closed due to damage caused by Hurricane Helene, which has affected much of western North Carolina. In an update released on Thursday, the estate reported that while the property experienced widespread damage across its buildings and grounds, the main house, which spans 175,000 square feet, sustained “minimal or no damage.” Other notable areas, including the winery, conservatory, hotels, and gardens, were also largely unharmed.

However, several facilities within the estate, particularly its entrance, farm, and various buildings, experienced significant flooding and damage. The estate noted that although some animals perished due to the storm, the majority are safe and accounted for.

Expressing gratitude for the community’s concern, the estate shared on Facebook, “We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of concern for our region as communities face the aftermath of this storm.” They highlighted their commitment to recovering swiftly and emphasized their eagerness to welcome visitors back once conditions permit.

According to a post on the estate’s website, Biltmore will remain closed to guests until at least October 15. The estate is currently working on clearing some of its roads to facilitate repairs. They have provided information regarding employee status, refunds, cancellations, and community resources on their website.

Buncombe County, where the Biltmore Estate is located, has been particularly hard-hit by Hurricane Helene. Officials in the county have reported numerous fatalities, contributing to a rising death toll across the southeastern United States that has surpassed 200. As the region begins the recovery process, the estate is focused on addressing the damage and ensuring the safety of both its staff and visitors.
