In the lead-up to November’s presidential election, a recent NBC News poll revealed that voters are yearning for change, emphasizing concepts like “normalcy,” “a better direction,” “secured borders,” “help with inflation,” and “less division.” These sentiments reflect the broader frustration within the electorate, which has become a defining narrative of the election.
The term “change” has emerged as a pivotal theme, particularly as voters express dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. With two candidates who can both claim a history in leadership—Kamala Harris, the sitting vice president, and Donald Trump, the former president—the discourse surrounding change is particularly charged. Notably, a significant majority of voters, approximately two-thirds, believe the nation is on the wrong track, and an equal proportion feels that their families’ incomes are not keeping pace with rising costs of living.
In the September poll, Harris was perceived as the candidate more aligned with change, garnering a 9-percentage-point advantage over Trump. Among registered voters, 47% selected Harris as the representative of change, while 38% chose Trump. However, when asked about their concerns regarding continuity in leadership styles, voters were divided. Approximately 40% expressed worry that Harris would perpetuate the policies of President Biden, while 39% were concerned that Trump would continue his approach from his previous term. The remaining 18% indicated that they were not worried about either candidate continuing their past policies.
The poll also included an open-ended question asking voters what they sought from presidential candidates in terms of representing change. Respondents who supported Harris focused on personal attributes such as “competency,” “less division,” and “normalcy,” as well as a strong desire to see Trump removed from the political arena. Additionally, issues related to women’s rights were highlighted in their responses.
For instance, one voter articulated that both candidates embody change but noted that Harris represents a more positive transformation, while Trump signifies a shift toward troubling realities. This sentiment underscores the belief that Harris could facilitate a return to a more stable political environment, similar to the promises made during Biden’s 2020 campaign. The prospect of Harris defeating Trump is viewed as a critical moment that could effectively conclude Trump’s political ambitions, allowing the country to move beyond his contentious influence.
Another voter emphasized that for her, change is intrinsically linked to the removal of Trump as a perceived threat to the nation. This reflects a widespread concern among Harris supporters regarding the potential ramifications of Trump’s political resurgence.
