The quake was centered approximately 30 kilometers west of Port Vila, the nation’s largest city, at a depth of 57 kilometers. It was soon followed by an aftershock registering a magnitude of 5.5.
In the immediate aftermath, a tsunami warning was issued for Vanuatu but was canceled less than two hours later. While there were no initial reports of casualties, communication challenges hindered the collection of detailed information. Phone lines to key services such as the police and hospitals were not operational, and government websites were inaccessible.
Despite the lack of direct communication, social media platforms began to fill with reports and videos depicting the scale of the damage. Visual evidence showed buildings reduced to rubble, landslides blocking critical roadways, and medical personnel tending to injuries outside the damaged Vila Central Hospital.
One notable structure in Port Vila, housing multiple diplomatic missions, sustained considerable damage. Diplomatic offices for nations including the United States, the UK, France, and New Zealand were impacted. Efforts were underway to ensure the safety of staff, including personnel from New Zealand’s High Commission.
Authorities in Australia and New Zealand, situated within the Pacific region, closely monitored the situation but reported no tsunami threats to their respective countries. Emergency teams were ready to respond should assistance be required, and international organizations began assessing the potential need for aid.
Vanuatu, a small island nation composed of 80 islands and home to a population of approximately 330,000, is located in a region prone to seismic activity. Its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis.
