Elon Musk’s Impact on the 2024 Election

US election 2024: Elon Musk anoints Donald Trump in double act at Pennsylvania rally at location of failed assassination attempt - NZ Herald

Billionaire Elon Musk has channeled approximately $75 million into a political organization he established to support Donald Trump, the former President and current Republican candidate for the 2024 election. This significant financial commitment was disclosed in a federal filing, highlighting Musk’s increasing role in Trump’s campaign as the election approaches on November 5.

The emergence of this funding further illustrates the power of wealthy donors in shaping American political landscapes. Speaking with right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson earlier in the month, Musk explained that he founded the political action committee (PAC) called America PAC to advocate for what he considers core values. These values include secure borders, responsible fiscal management, safe urban environments, an equitable justice system, freedom of expression, and the right to self-defense.

As the founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, Musk is recognized as one of the richest individuals globally. His backing of Trump intensified after a July assassination attempt against the former president, during which Musk joined him on the campaign trail during a subsequent rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in October.

At this rally, Musk made headlines by proclaiming, “I am not just MAGA. I am dark MAGA,” while wearing a black “Make America Great Again” hat. He accused Democrats of seeking to infringe upon citizens’ rights, including freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to vote.

Trump has frequently cited Musk’s endorsement during his campaign speeches, even promising to appoint him to lead a new government efficiency commission if he wins the presidency again. The America PAC has reportedly spent a total of $87 million on the campaign as of October 9, primarily focusing on mobilizing voters and canvassing efforts in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona.

The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision has played a pivotal role in the current political financing landscape, allowing corporations to spend unlimited amounts on political activities supporting candidates, provided they do not coordinate directly with campaigns. This ruling eliminated previous restrictions on corporate spending in elections and facilitated the rise of super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited funds.

This shift has resulted in skyrocketing campaign expenditures in the U.S. elections. The Citizens United ruling has also contributed to the proliferation of “dark money,” where individuals can conceal their contributions through shell companies donating to super PACs.

According to OpenSecrets, a political finance watchdog, the total expenditure for federal elections in 2024 is projected to reach a record-breaking $15.9 billion, surpassing the $15.1 billion spent during the 2020 election cycle. When adjusted for inflation, that amount would be equivalent to approximately $18.3 billion in current dollars.

OpenSecrets also reports that outside spending on campaigns, including the contributions made by Musk’s America PAC, has significantly outpaced previous election cycles. Nearly $2.6 billion has been spent by outside groups so far in 2024, almost a billion more than was spent at this point during the 2020 elections. Interestingly, this election cycle has seen an increase in spending favoring conservative candidates, marking a notable shift from the previous year, when liberal candidates received more support.

Overall, Musk’s significant financial involvement in Trump’s campaign reflects the broader trends of increased political spending and the influence of mega-donors in shaping election outcomes in the United States.
