The Spaniard’s won their past three clashes, including two earlier this year.
Daniil Medvedev is looking to break a 17-month title drought, but first, he faces the formidable challenge of Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev acknowledges Alcaraz’s prowess, stating, “When he’s in the zone, he’s probably the best player in the world. It’s a tough match-up, especially since he seems to be in top form right now.” The two are set to meet in the semifinals of the China Open in Beijing, both having reached this stage without dropping a set. Alcaraz recently defeated Karen Khachanov, while Medvedev took out Flavio Cobolli.
Alcaraz leads their head-to-head 5-2 and has won their last three matches, including victories in the 2024 Indian Wells final and the Wimbledon semifinals. He is aiming for his first title in Asia during just his second fall swing appearance and recently achieved his 200th career win against Tallon Griekspoor.
Medvedev, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, was the runner-up last year, losing to Jannik Sinner after Sinner defeated Alcaraz in the semifinals. Medvedev has a 1-2 record against Alcaraz on hard courts, with his sole win coming in the 2023 US Open semifinals.
Despite holding 20 career titles across various cities, the 28-year-old is yet to secure a victory in Beijing. Alcaraz discussed his competitive mindset, saying, “I always try to apply pressure during their service games to show them that they need to bring their best tennis to beat me. It’s about showing my determination on the court.”
