Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati reportedly urged Israel to fully comply with the terms of the recent ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of its forces from southern Lebanon. The statement came during discussions aimed at addressing regional security and implementing measures to ensure long-term peace.

The agreement, announced by U.S. President Joe Biden, outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli and Hezbollah forces from the region between the Blue Line a de facto border between Lebanon and Israel and the Litani River, located approximately 30 kilometers to the north. The withdrawal process is set to take place over 60 days.

Once the withdrawal is complete, Lebanese armed forces will assume control of the area, creating a buffer zone in alignment with the 2006 United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution was originally implemented to establish a framework for maintaining peace and security along the border after the 2006 conflict.

The Lebanese government’s decision to strengthen military presence in the south reflects a commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity. This action aims to prevent future escalations and ensure that the terms of the ceasefire are respected by all parties involved.

Prime Minister Mikati’s appeal for adherence to the agreement underscores Lebanon’s broader goal of achieving long-term stability and fostering an environment conducive to peace and development.

By focusing on regional security and upholding the terms of international resolutions, Lebanon seeks to navigate the path toward rebuilding trust and cooperation with its neighbors. This marks a critical step toward fostering a peaceful coexistence in the region.
