Richard Dalton, a former UK ambassador to Iran, has voiced strong concerns regarding the West’s unwavering support for Israel, arguing that it undermines efforts to de-escalate ongoing conflicts in the region. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dalton emphasized that this backing fosters a perception that Israel is free to act without restraint.
Dalton stated, “It’s working against establishing a peaceful settlement across the region, whether within Palestine or beyond because it is creating this sense that Israel can do what it wants.” He pointed out that Israel appears to operate with impunity, even to the extent of disregarding the diplomatic overtures of its Western allies. “They can humiliate the United States,” he added, underscoring the disconnect between Israel’s actions and the expectations of its supporters, particularly regarding progress towards Palestinian statehood.
The former ambassador highlighted a growing discontent among Western public opinion toward Israel’s military actions and their implications for human rights. “I believe that opinion has turned against Israel because of Israel’s action, because of Israel’s denial of basic human rights,” Dalton explained. He stressed that Israel’s claims to rights and security are not being reciprocated towards Palestinians, further complicating the path to peace.
Dalton’s remarks reflect a shifting sentiment in the West, where increasing scrutiny of Israel’s policies could have implications for future diplomatic relations. As calls for accountability grow louder, the challenge remains for policymakers to balance support for Israel with the urgent need for a resolution to the Palestinian issue. Without addressing these underlying tensions, the prospect for a lasting peace remains elusive.
