Surging Numbers and Rising Risks in English Channel Crossings.

Three migrants die in Channel crossing attempt - InfoMigrants

Three individuals lost their lives on Sunday morning while attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat, according to reports from the French coastguard. The incident occurred off the coast of Sangatte , when some of the passengers ended up in the water while trying to board the vessel.

The fatalities were recovered from the water by helicopter, while an additional 45 individuals received medical attention on the beach, many showing signs of hypothermia. Among them, four were transported to a hospital, with seven reported to be in critical condition, requiring intensive care. Authorities confirmed that search operations at sea were ongoing to locate any remaining survivors.

Officials noted that this year has been the deadliest on record for attempts to cross the Channel, with such perilous journeys occurring with alarming regularity. The mayor of Sangatte remarked that these crossings seem unending, with people risking their lives despite the inherent dangers, particularly during this season when conditions are even more hazardous.

Local representatives expressed concern over the risks involved in crossing the Channel in small boats, emphasizing that the current temperatures make survival in the water for even a short duration nearly impossible. Rescuers, though quick to respond, face immense challenges due to the life-threatening nature of such incidents.

So far this year, over 36,000 people have attempted the crossing in small boats, surpassing the previous year’s total of 29,437, as per government estimates.
