Ukraine Critiques Global Response as Russian Attacks Surge in East

Russia pummels exhausted Ukrainian forces ahead of springtime advance | AP News

Heavy fighting continues across eastern Ukraine, with multiple Russian assaults reported along the frontline. According to Ukraine’s military leadership, more than 50 attacks have been repelled. In the strategic region near the city of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces have been holding off Russian advances. Pokrovsk, a key resupply hub, is a vital target for Russian forces as they try to gain control of the area.

Russian troops have been slowly advancing toward Pokrovsk, aiming to disrupt Ukraine’s logistics in the region. Pro-Russian sources also claim that Kremlin forces are storming several towns in eastern Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing struggle for dominance in the Donbas region. The situation remains tense as Ukrainian artillery units continue to defend the area.

In a daily briefing, Ukrainian military officials reported 166 combat clashes over the past 24 hours, with Pokrovsk and the nearby areas of Kurakhivsk and Selydove in the Donetsk region being key flashpoints. The General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces mentioned that Russian forces attempted to dislodge Ukrainian units from defensive positions near several settlements, including Myrolyubivka, Promin, Lysivka, and Selydove. Despite these attempts, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled 56 attacks, with the most intense fighting concentrated around Selydove.

The town of Pokrovsk is particularly important because it serves as a crucial junction for Ukraine’s railway supply routes, which form the backbone of the Ukrainian defense lines in the region. Russian forces have been intensifying their attacks in this area, trying to sever these supply lines and weaken Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. The grinding advance toward Pokrovsk, however, has been slow, with Ukrainian forces putting up stiff resistance.

Pro-Russian military bloggers have echoed reports of ongoing fighting, claiming that Russian forces are attempting to capture four towns in the region: Selydove, Hirnyk, Kurakhove, and Toretsk. These towns, located in the eastern part of the country, are seen as strategic footholds that Russia seeks to control as part of its broader push to consolidate its presence in Donbas.

One prominent pro-Russian military commentator mentioned that Russian troops were attacking the town of Hirnyk from several directions, with fighting reported in the town’s center. Hirnyk had a population of over 10,000 people before the war, and the fighting there has intensified as both sides continue to vie for control.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has expressed frustration with the United Nations, following the news that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is attending a summit in Russia. This marks Guterres’ first visit to the country in more than two years. His participation in the event has sparked criticism from Ukraine, which argued that his presence there does not contribute to the cause of peace and could harm the UN’s reputation. Ukrainian officials pointed out that Guterres had declined an invitation to a peace summit held in Switzerland earlier this year, which aimed to address the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry publicly criticized the UN leader’s decision, accusing him of making a “wrong choice” by attending the summit in Russia, where he is expected to discuss both the war in Ukraine and the escalating crisis in the Middle East. The peace summit in Switzerland, which took place in June, had involved representatives from dozens of countries, though none from Russia. Moscow had dismissed that summit as inconsequential.

The UN Secretary-General’s office has stated that Guterres intends to discuss the Ukrainian conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit, alongside other global issues. However, this has done little to ease Kyiv’s frustration, as Ukrainian leaders continue to demand more robust international action against Russia’s aggression.

In another development, pro-Russian sources have highlighted ongoing Russian offensives in Donetsk, with reports of attacks on multiple towns. One well-known Ukrainian-born pro-Russian blogger claimed that events in the region are “unfolding rapidly,” with Russian troops intensifying their push to expand their control. His accounts have been supported by other pro-Russian bloggers, though official confirmation from Russia’s Ministry of Defense has yet to be provided.

The situation in eastern Ukraine remains fluid, with both sides locked in a fierce battle for control over key strategic areas. As Russian forces continue their assaults on towns like Pokrovsk and Selydove, Ukrainian defenders are holding their ground, determined to protect critical supply routes and prevent further Russian gains. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both military and diplomatic efforts struggling to bring about a resolution.
