UNICEF and UN Highlight Urgent Need for Ceasefire to Protect Lebanese Civilians.

UN says one child a day killed in Israel’s war on Lebanon in past month

On October 31, 2024, the United Nations reported that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon has resulted in the tragic loss of one child per day in Lebanon, with the start of hostilities tracing back to October 4. Since then, reports indicate that the conflict has left over 10 Lebanese children wounded daily. This has caused significant alarm among humanitarian organizations, with UNICEF highlighting the escalating toll on children’s lives and well-being.

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed cautious optimism, stating that a potential ceasefire agreement could be reached soon. The ceasefire discussions are being aided by the visit of U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, who is working to mediate and potentially halt the violence.

Meanwhile, the conflict’s impact has also been felt in Gaza, where an Israeli airstrike targeted Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya. This strike destroyed a recently stocked warehouse filled with critical medical supplies, further hindering the ability of medical facilities to care for the injured.

Since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, between Israel and Gaza, reports estimate that approximately 43,204 Palestinians have been killed, with around 101,641 others injured. The initial attack by Hamas on that date left around 1,139 Israeli citizens dead and more than 200 people taken captive, adding to the complexity and severity of the situation.

Lebanon has also suffered considerably, with the current conflict resulting in an estimated 2,822 Lebanese fatalities and about 12,937 wounded. The humanitarian cost has prompted urgent calls for ceasefire agreements and a focus on negotiations to prevent further loss of life and destruction.
