The European Union’s chief diplomat for foreign policy, Josep Borrell, recently attended a conference in Cyprus focused on advancing a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This initiative, driven by civil society organizations under the Geneva Initiative, aims to establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
During his keynote address, Borrell stressed the urgency of achieving peace in the Middle East, emphasizing that the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the military tensions in Lebanon are inflicting severe consequences on the region and the world. He stated, “The cost of inaction is unbearable, not only for those enduring the violence but also for global stability.” He reiterated that a ceasefire in Gaza is vital and dismissed repetitive, ineffective approaches to longstanding issues. Instead, he called for innovative strategies to resolve the conflict.
Borrell commended the efforts of the organizations promoting peaceful solutions, acknowledging the challenges they face within their communities. He remarked, “Your work has immense value, as it represents hope for a better future.” He underlined that seeing Israelis and Palestinians come together for dialogue is a crucial step toward reconciliation.
Borrell also addressed a controversial issue involving Hungary’s invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. He noted that EU member states are bound to uphold ICC decisions, emphasizing that compliance is essential for the credibility of international law.
Following his visit to Cyprus, Borrell will travel to Lebanon for discussions with political leaders and UN representatives. The agenda includes pursuing a sustainable ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, as well as working towards a comprehensive peace process centered on the two-state solution.
Earlier in the week, Borrell visited Jordan, expressing strong support for the country’s role in promoting regional peace and stability. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing the crisis and preventing further escalation.
Borrell’s statements reflect a broader EU commitment to fostering peace and stability in the Middle East. He expressed hope that dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders could pave the way for a peaceful resolution. His remarks also serve as a reminder of the pressing need for global leaders to prioritize innovative and effective solutions to the conflict.
