Urgent Polio Vaccination Campaign Resumes Amid Crisis in Gaza.

Polio resurfaces in Gaza | UNICEF Australia

A crucial polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza has resumed, but only in Gaza City, following a delay due to severe Israeli bombardments and significant displacement of residents. The campaign, which began in September after the first polio case in 25 years was identified in the area, was intended to provide a second dose of the vaccine to approximately 119,000 children under ten years old. However, the World Health Organization and UNICEF have expressed doubts about meeting this target due to ongoing access issues.

Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, described the situation in northern Gaza as catastrophic, highlighting the emergence of malnutrition among both children and adults. He noted that more than 120 injured individuals are currently without basic food supplies, affecting both patients and medical staff working tirelessly. Dr. Abu Safiya warned that without immediate intervention, Gaza could face another health crisis, characterized by increased cases of polio, malnutrition, and famine, which would severely compromise the immune systems of the population.

The United Nations recently characterized the situation in northern Gaza as “apocalyptic,” indicating that the entire population faces an imminent risk of death as Israel continues its military operations against Hamas militants in the region.
